HOW TO COORDINATE YOU AND YOUR PARTNER OUTFITS

Updated: Dec 23, 2024

So, you want to book a couple photoshoot and to capture your love in all its photogenic glory. But now comes the tricky part: What do we wear?! Don’t worry, coordinating outfits doesn’t mean you have to look like you’re auditioning for a matching pajamas ad. Here’s a fun, foolproof guide to help you and your partner slay your shoot while staying true to your style and the vibe of the location.

1. Match the Vibe, Not Each Other

Your outfits should complement the setting, not turn you into a clone of your partner. If you’re headed to the beach, think breezy and light—flowy dresses, linen shirts, or soft pastels. For a forest shoot? Cozy textures like knits, earthy tones, and maybe a cute jacket. Urban location? Go sleek with darker tones, edgy jackets, or even a pop of neon if you’re feeling bold.

Joke Break: Matching camo outfits in the forest? Great way to disappear.

2. Pick a Color Palette and Stick to It

Choose a palette of 2-3 colors that work well together and build your outfits around them. Think blues and whites for a classic coastal vibe, or earthy greens, tans, and browns for a nature-inspired shoot. Neutrals are always a safe bet, but feel free to throw in a pop of color—maybe your scarf matches their shoes!

Pro Tip: One of you can wear a pattern, but keep it subtle. If both of you wear bold patterns, the photo will scream chaos instead of romance.

3. Layer It Up (or Down)

Layers can add texture and depth to your photos. For a cozy fall shoot in the forest, throw on a scarf, cardigan, or even a cute hat. In summer, go simple—think sundresses, light shirts, and minimal accessories. Layers also let you mix and match during the shoot, so you can get a variety of looks without an outfit change.

Fun Tip: Urban shoot? Layer in cool accessories like a leather jacket or sunglasses for that we’re too cool for this vibe.

4. Dress for the Season

Nobody wants to see you shivering in a strapless dress during a winter shoot or sweating buckets in wool sweaters in the summer. Be practical—dress for the weather! For a winter home session, think cozy knits, socks, and a blanket for those cuddly shots. For a spring picnic vibe, flowy fabrics and floral prints are perfect.

Humor Moment: If you’re doing a winter shoot, matching earmuffs are adorable. Matching frostbite? Not so much.

5. Keep It Comfortable

Photoshoots can take a while, so make sure you’re wearing something you feel good in. That bodycon dress or those too-tight shoes? Save them for another day. If you’re fidgeting with your clothes the whole time, it’ll show in the photos. Plus, when you’re comfortable, you’re confident—and confidence is the real showstopper.

Pro Tip: For a home shoot, think cozy—oversized sweaters, barefoot vibes, or even PJs if you’re going for a playful look!

6. Avoid Trends That Will Age Poorly

Remember those denim-on-denim couple looks from the early 2000s? Let’s not repeat history. Stick to timeless pieces that won’t make you cringe when you look back in 10 years. A classic button-up, a simple dress, or a cool jacket will never go out of style.

Fun Fact: You can never go wrong with jeans and a white shirt—it’s the couple photoshoot equivalent of avocado toast.

7. Bring Out the Props (but Don’t Overdo It)

Props can add a playful element to your shoot, especially if they match the environment. For a beach shoot, bring a picnic blanket or a cute sunhat. Forest shoot? A basket or a bouquet of wildflowers works great. Just don’t overdo it—this isn’t a Pinterest craft explosion.

Joke Break: Leave the inflatable flamingo at home unless it’s a pool party.

8. Test Drive Your Outfits

Before the shoot, try on your outfits together in front of a mirror. Make sure the colors and styles complement each other and that nothing looks out of place. This also gives you a chance to tweak anything—like that one shirt that looked great online but screams “What was I thinking?” in real life.

Final Words of Wisdom

At the end of the day, your couple shoot is about capturing your connection, not just your clothes, although coordinating your outfits can definitely enhance the whole look but don't forget to relax and HAVE FUN! Remember—whatever you wear, you’re going to look amazing together if you are having fun.
